On April 29, 2024, Representative Thomas Kutz of the 87th District announced that various school districts in the region have been awarded grants from the School Safety and Security Committee (SSSC) to enhance safety, security, and mental health support within schools. In a statement, Rep. Kutz emphasized the importance of these grants, stating, "Updating facilities to ensure students, teachers, administrators and school employees are safe in their classrooms is critical."

Kutz further highlighted the dual impact of the grants, noting, “These awards will not only be used to accomplish that goal, but they will also support the mental health of our local students." He expressed his satisfaction with the allocation of funds, stating, “This funding will make a difference in our schools, and I am glad to see these state dollars invested in the local community.”

The grants, totaling $155 million, were approved by the SSSC and were part of the FY 2023-24 budget. They were distributed through various programs including the Noncompetitive School Mental Health Grants program, the Formula-Based School Safety and Security Meritorious Grants program, Competitive School Safety and Security Grants program, and Targeted School Safety Grants for Nonpublic Schools funding program.

Among the districts that received awards in Rep. Kutz’s district are Carlisle Area School District, Cumberland Perry Area Career and Technical School, Cumberland Valley School District, Mechanicsburg Area School District, and South Middleton School District.

Individual amounts awarded to these districts ranged from $166,868 to $461,573. Rep. Kutz encouraged those with inquiries about the grants to reach out to his office directly.
